5Toque unico!!Mar 06, 2002
By Enio Gonzalez Arreaza

5Quiroga's bestJan 03, 2002
By O. M. Suarez "aerobol"
Horacio Quiroga has been considered one of the best Latin American short story writers. This book is the best proof of that assesment. It is not fair to judge Quiroga's style based only upon the cruelty of "La Gallina Degollada" (The decapitated chicken), which -by the way- is a lesson on how to write short stories. This diminishes the quality of the other tales, sprinkled with social testimony (and subtle denunciations), love stories, and with plenty of humanity. Quiroga's love for nature is reflected occasionally in this book as his characters struggle against it. Other books are better examples: Cuentos de la Selva (a must in children's literature) and two of my favorite ones: Anaconda and El Regreso de Anaconda. However this book demonstrates how few words a genial writer needs to describe insanity, bravery, and love as unavoidable parts of Humankind.

1Do not buy this edition!May 23, 2007
By BookWoym "bookwoym"
I purchased this edition of the book as part of a reading list for my doctoral exams. The text is there, but the punctuation in the book is HORRIBLE! That is, there are no accents or tildes - which is unacceptable for Spanish (especially since the use or lack of these can change the meaning of a word)! In addition, by the end of the first page, I noticed errors in verb conjugations in the Spanish - if you are only seeking to read the stories and are not bothered by the distraction of grammatical errors and trying to figure out what tense the verb SHOULD be, then this is for you. However, if you are relatively proficient in Spanish, the orthographic errors are completely maddening and impossible to ignore. Clearly, someone was hired to type up the text - and from appearances, does not know Spanish - or how to use a standard keyboard to create international characters. Additionally, I am so put off that anyone would have such a lack of consideration and actually publish this and put it out there for the general public! It is a disgrace to Horacio Quiroga and to academics alike who value language and accuracy. Choose another edition! I gave this book one star for having text.... not worth the trouble.

5These stories still haunt me.Oct 05, 2000
By Katherine F. Peake
Naively I thought that these stories would be either about love, madness or death. What a surprize when I realized that they contained all three elements! I have been studying Spanish on my own and found this the most interesting book of short stories I have ever read, English or Spanish. Every story packs a punch.
